Language and Culture

Ts’uubaa-asatx is resilient and deeply values its customs, traditions, song, dance, and heritage. By prioritizing cultural preservation and revitalization, we are ensuring that future generations can continue to embrace and celebrate our identity.

Embracing Cultural Practices

We are committed to creating opportunities for members to actively participate in cultural traditions, including:
✔ Hosting and maintaining cultural ceremonies and events woven into community gatherings.
✔ Partnering with knowledge keepers to strengthen resources and programs related to hunting, food preservation, language, and ceremonial protocols.
✔ Providing resources that support traditional practices, such as maps of hunting and fishing locations (including on the Salish Sea), cold storage for food fish, and space for food processing.

Preserving and Sharing Cultural Teachings

Passing down cultural knowledge and traditions is essential to the identity of Ts’uubaa-asatx. To ensure our heritage remains strong, we are:
✔ Educating members and neighboring communities on cultural revitalization through collaboration with local knowledge keepers.
✔ Strengthening pathways to share traditions with future generations through song and dance.
✔ Developing a language preservation program, including research and filmed documentation, to empower future generations with the ability to speak and understand their traditional language.
✔ Hosting regular celebrations at Ts’uubaa-asatx Square to honor our totem pole, culture, teachings, territory, and relationship within the broader Lake Cowichan community.

By investing in language and culture, Ts’uubaa-asatx is ensuring that our traditions continue to thrive, connecting our past with our future.
